Welcome to this New Adventure!

4,600 Miles from Alaska!

After 60 winters I decided to take a break from the Alaska lifestyle I have always loved. I invite anyone interested in Alaska–or the authentic perspectives I may bring to the Philippine experience–to join!

The content below was originally paywalled.

Alaska has a lot in common with Philippines

Alaska became a territory of the United States of America October 18, 1867 after it was purchased from Russia. Philippines became a possession of the same USA as a result of the Spanish-American War (1899-1902). That wasn’t what the Filipino people wanted; they wanted Independence. But, first they had to endure Japanese Occupation two years during WWII over a period longer than the Japanese occupied the Alaska islands of Attu and Kiska.

Over 100,000 Filipinos fought side by side with Americans during WWII,

I have studied and taught Alaska History over several decades and have become disappointed in the direction our state has taken after so much promise with bountiful North Slope Oil development and a Permanent Fund meant to be an endowment for future generations. It looks like we elect politicians and send them to Juneau to serve Seattle. I know this because I lived in Juneau 20 years.

I have written extensively about this and will continue to do so at my website: DonnListon.co.

Philippines has some 114 million people, in a resource-rich archipelago where East meets West, over an area roughly the size of Alaska’s North Slope. Philippines has been impacted by revolution and corrupt politicians but the Filipino people focus on family, food security, and faith.

They are incredibly resourceful.
